Zero Waste Week starts on Monday 6th September!

Posted under Other news

National Zero Waste Week

It’s Zero Waste Week and although in my case that clashes a bit with “Back To School” week, I’m going to be making an effort to cut down on family food wasting this week. Firstly, I’m going to use my Google Calendar meal planning system to keep a beady eye on the family food shop. This is a great tip I got from Simple Mom. I don’t want to restate everything on the Simple Mom website, but essentially you set up a separate Google Calendar from your usual one and set each meal as an “Event” to recur every 2 weeks. I put the URL for the recipe (if I’m using one, there are a few dishes I could probably cook blind fold by now) in the Where/Location field and the text of the recipe in the Notes section. You can then email yourself reminders of what you’re cooking each day.

Why do this? The basic reason is that having a menu plan eliminates waste. If you know what you are going to cook for the week, it is a huge help when doing your weekly shop, stops you ordering too much food (and having to put it in the bin or panic eat it before it hits the use-by date) and helps you keep an eye on whether you are cooking nutritious food for your kids. You can plan things sensibly, for example if you are cooking chicken every second Sunday, you know you will have chicken stock and so make sure you have the ingredients for risotto, soup or whatever you usually make with it. I have now saved my shopping list for each scheduled week in my Ocado account, so all I have to do is bring up “Week 1 Shopping List” in my account and add all the items straight away when doing my shopping online. If you use Epicurious and some other recipe websites, you can also email yourself a shopping list.

Secondly, I’m going to try and use up everything in my store cupboards for non-planned lunches etc. I don’t menu plan for lunches so I am often tempted to go out to a cafe (very easy if you work from home and get fed up of the same walls) but this week I am going to concentrate on using up old ingredients and taking out packed lunches if I go out using leftovers.

Thirdly, I’m going to either see if I can persuade the council to pick up my food waste recycling (they used to at my old address) or get a bokashi bin or wormery that will fit into our small back garden.

I’ll let you know how I get on!

Organic fortnight is almost here!

Posted under Other news

Organic Fortnight is almost here – it runs from the 3rd of September till the 17th and is organised by the Soil Association. It aims to publicise the ways in which you can help the environment and support organic produce.

Food which is farmed organically is more friendly to wildlife and means herbicides and pesticides are not released into the environment. I’ve been an Abel and Cole customer for years, I enjoy cooking and like having local, seasonal veg and fruit (their new recipe cards are great as well).

I have also grown herbs, potatoes, strawberries, rocket and tomatoes in my own garden, although I will admit to not being super green fingered! Growing your own is fun and healthy. It’s on of the suggestions from the Soil Association about how to go organic without breaking the bank!

Finally, if you want to celebrate Organic Fortnight and are looking for organic gifts for a baby or child, mimimyne has a wide range of rganic baby gifts, organic baby clothes and organic kids clothes. Conventionally produced cotton involves intensive use of pesticides and some believe it triggers skin allergies in children. If you would like to buy Fair Trade as well, try the Animal Tails range.

Online retail, the brand message, and the sustainability message

Posted under Other news

Hi everyone, my name is Raihan Islam – I thought it might be a good idea to write my first post on the Mimimyne blog, and what better way for me to do that than to discuss some of my experiences this summer as an intern?

Tabitha at Old Spitalfields Market

For the past several weeks, I have been working to improve the web development and digital marketing strategy of Mimimyne, this has included adding new features such as e-coupons, reviews, SEO, and affiliate e-commerce integration.  Working with Mimimyne’s director, Tabitha, we have updated product listings and have taken search terms into account to ensure our customers can find the products they desire.  The first Sunday of my internship, we worked a stall at Old Spitalfields Market, it was pretty fun interacting with the customers!  I have also had the benefit of networking with various entrepreneurs, consultants, and other professionals in the green sector – it’s been a great run.

Ibis Kids Wallpaper

Online retail is becoming more competitive as new players enter the market, and for an eco-friendly company such as Mimimyne, all of the right factors need to be taken into account.  ”Right factors?”  For a company with a sustainable message, these include the way products are marketed.  It could be as simple as describing the product in a way consumers will understand “that’s progressive, that’s eco-friendly, that’s green,” and Mimimyne currently takes this into account by providing labels that consumers know and trust, such as FSC, Soil Association, and others detailed in its environmental policy.  Our product listings make use of bold, green copywriting as well as ethical standard seals to emphasize some of the ethical standards in adherence – see one of our new kids wallpaper listings for an example with just copywriting, and this funky baby romper suit for an example with an ethical standard seal.

Ogilvy Idea Shop East

About a week ago, I attended an Idea Shop East session with Tabitha, and the brand message was emphasized – “Growing Up Green” – and it makes sense, Mimimyne promotes the idea of families growing up green because not only does doing so benefit economic practices that are concerned with society and the environment, growing up green also builds a cultural understanding in those families – it is very much a grassroots process.  We will continue to improve our brand by leading the way forward for sustainable communities.

Gary Johnston, Alan Knight OBE, and Harry Wallop at Fishburn Hedges

Today, I attended the Fishburn Hedges event, What’s Next… for sustainability: is the message getting through? Although there is great cynicism as to whether the sustainability message is getting across today, companies across the developed world are hitting progressive milestones. One way to get the message across to the consumer is through the various sustainable labels and accreditations available in the marketplace.  Another is through participation in customer rewards programs for ethical trading companies like Mimimyne.  The hope is that such practices will flourish with implementation in the developing world, as it would be ideal if society in developing markets could enjoy a similar lifestyle as developed ones do.  I enjoyed asking some of the panelists questions – their insight is rather invaluable at a time when sustainability is the best progressive economic practice a company could consider.  When it’s done right, it cuts costs, allows for accelerated distribution, and improves societal development through efficient management of resources.

Alan Knight commented on sustainability as a “supply chain challenge,” and there are a few ways to look at this.  On a smaller scale, as Mimimyne retails in the UK, we focus on sourcing our items to be made by local designers and to be shipped by our suppliers within the UK, reducing our carbon footprint.  Regarding getting the sustainability message across, he noted that good retailing provides the consumer with the smallest possible choice, meaning that if there is too wide a selection and too much to think about, consumers will get confused.  Depending on the scale in which a business operates, supply chain management can either be relatively simple or quite complex, but the further sustainable practices are implemented, the more efficient large scale management can become.  We are taking this message on board by succinctly describing our products and making their ethical standard labels more clear, and as we continue to develop, we aim to distribute to locations outside of the UK.

Doug Johnston emphasized that failures in business strategy towards sustainability lack vision.  Companies’ strategic objectives do not properly incorporate sustainability, and as a result, instead of sustainability flourishing, there is confusion.  That is just the picture internally, that key stakeholders in the company must care about how sustainability drives the strategic objectives.  We focus on sustainability through promoting eco-friendly consumption, that is part and parcel of our objective.

Harry Wallop explained that media, marketing, and PR has its role in promoting sustainability, but the message has to be worth writing about – if no one will read about it, why write it?  In general, given that the message of sustainability does not resonate as well as we would hope in our society, companies have to work towards communicating a definable sustainable difference about their products and services to the consumer.  While we have a sustainable vision, we have more work to do in order to inspire consumers that sustainability is the economical way forward.  It is one objective to capture the market, but it is another to introduce consumers into that market.

As Mimimyne continues to grow, we will work to consider the best practices in sustainability, helping get the message across that growing up green is not only great for families, but also great for society, the environment, and the economy, too.  I’d love to read your feedback!

Just So Festival – new camping event for families only!

Posted under Other news

I was recently sent a press release by the Just So Festival, and as this sounds like a great family and eco friendly event of the kind I’d love to go to, I’m happy to pass on the info to Mimimyne’s blog readers! Sadly I don’t think Mimimyne will be able to exhibit at this one but will definitely be interested in appearing at this event in the future.

Kids enjoying themselves at the Just So Festival

This summer sees the launch of the first ever camping festival devoted entirely to families.

The ‘Just So Festival’ is the dream child of two couples who’ve spent years visiting traditional festivals with their children and finding much of the entertainment to be off-limits… so they’ve set up a camping weekend in 65 acres of unspoilt Staffordshire woodland where everything – from traditional fairground to artificial beach, from gypsy bands to top name authors – is aimed at giving children and their parents a fantastic and magical experience.

Highlights from the programme will include a visit from the Royal Armories team with their ‘Never Mind the Pollocks’ action-art event, Parkour training sessions from some of the UK’s top free-runners, following the Fairy Queen trail with the Fairyland Trust, and one of our favourites, a party with the Moomins.

According to festival director Rowan Hoban, “families will be able to go on this amazing journey of the imagination, participating in a medley of art, craft, music and theatre within a beautiful natural landscape”.

The experience of families going along to the Just So Festival will be a far cry from your average festival. Camping is in small woodland glades, where families can request to be sited near friends. There will be an bedtime noise curfew (though the local rabbits and hedgehogs may not comply), and a large and comfy nappy changing area with changing mats and wipes laid on. The loos will, of course, be lovely.

The Just So Festival will take place from 20th-22nd August and will play host to up to 3,000 people. Tickets are now on sale.

Just So Festival Community Interest Company is a not-for-profit organisation.

A greener lifestyle: joining Zipcar

Posted under Other news

First of all, I hope you are all enjoying a lovely Easter break! I wanted to share with you what I’ve been doing recently to help me work towards my 10:10 pledge (as an individual, and as a business too!). My family recently moved to a car-free development so when our residents parking permit ran out, we had to sell our car (and the roof box) on Ebay. This was a relatively hassle-free experience in the end (Ebay is a very efficient process if you are a seller) and we were happy with the prices we got, but the next step was worrying about how we were going to get around on those unavoidable occasions when we will need wheels.

Step forward, Zipcar. We had researched some other companies but Zipcar is the only one that currently lets you take pets on board (in a pet carrier) so it was a no-brainer for our family. Also, I caught them doing a promotion outside Waitrose, so was able to join for £25 a year plus £30 free driving time – not bad! This meant I was able to scurry home with the Zipcar card in my hot little hand ready to activate, rather than waiting for them to send it.

My husband and I then had a look at the site, logged in and booked a car for a Saturday drive to Epping Forest with the kids and Dexter the dog. The site is VERY easy to use, it allows to you select your nearest car for the block of time you want. In our area, the nearest car (they all have names, bless) was very popular and seemed to be booked out for a whole week, so we had to choose one about ten minutes walk away. This is a tad inconvenient if you have a dog in a pet carrier, but my husband nobly went and fetched it. Wow factor? If you have an iPhone, you can UNLOCK the door with it once you’ve installed the Zipcar app and make the car HONK. It’s like being James Bond, or Knight Rider or something. The kids (and my husband) love this.

The car itself was a VW Golf, which seems to be a popular model. It was very clean, our only complaint was that it smelt very faintly of smoke. Possibly someone just used it who had been in a smoky venue, who knows. You pay for petrol with their complimentary credit card, but ours had a full tank anyway, so off we sped to Epping Forest. The dog thought that as he was in his crate, he must be on his way to the vet, and whimpered all the way, but hopefully he’ll get more relaxed about this! We had a lovely walk for an hour or two, and then faced a slight obstacle – muddy boots. In our old car, we’d have just hopped in merrily and lived with the dirt. However, we had brought a towel to clean the dog, luckily, with so put the boots on this and put him back in his carrier. My husband returned the car to its bay, with a farewell honk or too.

We’ll be continuing to use this service and are very happy with it – we may not use it so much for driving out of London for UK holidays, as it works out a little less economically, but in London and around I think it will be a lifesaver. And we are saving ourselves between £1500 – £2000 a year from our old car’s running costs – it will take a lot of Zipcar trips to get anywhere near that!

Book of Green nominated for Eco Veggie Awards 2010

Posted under Other news

I just received an email from the Book of Green, which Mimimyne is in this year (we’re going to be listed in their free iPhone App as well – can’t wait to be in an App!) and wanted to let you know that Book of Green has been nominated for Best Media/Publication at the Eco Veggie Awards 2010!

Eco Veggie Awards 2010, honour the movers and shakers of the Green, Fair Trade and veggie circles – the people, organisations and products that are making a difference right now.

Awards organiser Tim Barford from Bristol based hemp firm Yaoh says: ‘The threat of Climate Change, and the reality of poverty, injustice and environmental destruction, are there for us to deal with – this is the challenge to the generations of today. We aim to focus on the positive, not the negative, it’s the only way forward to achieve solutions, and for this reason we are honouring some of the brightest and biggest achievers on the planet.’

Book of Green said: ‘We were delighted when we discovered we had been nominated for the award. We created the national paperback eco directory last year to promote a collective set of eco/ethical businesses. We made it free to enable the public to gain access the genuine green marketplace easily. We had such a fantastic response in 09 we’ve doubled our print run to 60,000 copies for 2010, and we are looking forward to launching our free iPhone app soon’

The awards are voted for by the public and winners of the ten categories will be announced on Sunday May 30th at The Bristol Eco Veggie Fayre. To vote for favourites (including Book of Green!) visit Eco Veggie Fayre Awards

Mother’s Day gifts from Mimimyne

Posted under Other news

It’s Mother’s Day on the 14th of March this year and I know what I’ll be getting for my mother this year: a lovely Mum’s Bag from Carry-a-bag. Mimimyne stock these beautiful bags, which are made from recycled vintage fabrics by Sally Walton in East Sussex. Sally designs, makes and hand prints her bags as well and was one of the first designer-makers to champion the eco cause of bringing a bag shopping instead of taking one away with you – and later putting it into the rubbish, from which it goes to landfill, taking many years to degrade, or ends up as litter, endangering wildlife and spoiling the appearance of our beautiful countryside. Sally has also made some limited edition “With Love” bags, which I’ll be adding to the site in the next couple of days and would also make a beautiful present.

Mum's Bag

Mum's Bag

Another present I’d suggest considering for a mother with a baby, a Heba changing bag made by a women’s charity in the East End of London. We are currently giving one of these away with the Primary Times Online and they make great gifts, with practical pockets for mobile phones, bottles and other mummy paraphernalia! 85% of the purchase price goes direct to the charity and you know you are helping a good cause, as these low-income women are learning how to use their sewing and design skills to build a great future for themselves and their families. Oh yes, and the bag is on sale this month!
