New eco-shop Mimimyne has just launched their range of carefully selected sustainably designed furnishings and fashion for children and parents this weekend at the Spitalfields Show & Green Fair in London; the first chance to see the products away from the online shop.
Mimimyne is an eco-friendly company selling a range of quirky and contemporary quality designer products aimed at children from toddlers to teens. The brainchild of writer and researcher Tabitha Potts, co-author with Daisy Goodwin of Bringing Up Baby: A New Mother’s Companion, Mimimyne aims to fill a gap in the market for excitingly designed, contemporary products for kids which also consider the designer’s and consumer’s carbon footprints, and encourages children to “grow up green”.
One showpiece product is The Rainy Day Box from Creative Charlie – which this weekend won overall winner in the Practical Pre-School Awards 2008 Toys and Games category. The testers said that “everything in the Rainy Day Box was great – its value as a creative resource as well as incorporating flexible and enjoyable activities, whilst helping teach children about the environment.” Mimimyne also stocks Creative Charlie’s Travel Kit, which will appeal not only to creative children but frantic parents too – both kits are ideal for school holidays, car journeys and miserable, wet days.
Another of Mimimyne’s key products is award-winning designer Naomi Dean’s Tiny Footprint Desk. Described by the coolhunter.net as “a cutting-edge young designer”, Naomi’s designs emphasise sustainability. The Tiny Footprint Desk uses recycled office furniture and timber offcuts that would otherwise be dumped in landfill to create a unique and beautiful piece which can be enjoyed from age 7 to adulthood. Her Spin Tables are the perfect size for storing toys, books and DVD’s and offer a lovely, practical solution to the perennial problem of where to store kids’ toys!
Samuel Morgan at Spinifex is the designer of the funky OTO and OTA blackboard/storage unit which is a perfect ‘information hub’ for a family hallway or teenager’s room. He will be featuring his new SPLATT art storage chair for children, on show at the Designer’s Block this September, later this year. Mimimyne also stocks toys from Paperpod which children can paint and decorate themselves to their heart’s content without getting a telling-off!
Meanwhile, for the fashion-conscious child or teen, why not try cutting-edge designer productofyourenvironment’s ‘I Love My Pony’ t-shirt – an ironic take on the ubiquitous ‘I Love NY’ T shirt? Or bag a reversible, reusable cloth carrier bag with their names on, designed by Sally Walton of carry-a-bag? Mothers can accessorise with their own reusable ‘Mum’s bag’ carrier, and save the planet at the same time. Dads will soon get a slice of the action with a Pint and Half-pint father and child T-shirt combo from funky kid and babieswear designer Twisted Twee – with all these products made from organic or recycled cotton.
The clothes range is rapidly expanding with soon to be added Teenytini by JK Lange’s hand-made in the UK woollen outfits for babies and toddlers. Finally, Mimimyne also stocks own brand T shirts, designed in collaboration with 3lotusmedia, featuring quirky illustrated characters Mimi and Myne and their friend Percy the Squirrel.

The weather gods were clearly smiling on Mimimyne yesterday and we had glorious sunshine the whole day. The bags and T-shirts in particular did well and there was a new product for us to exhibit, a stool made of reclaimed wood by Mark Nunn from Greenheart Creations, which is based on the old tailor’s stools that you used to see being used in Spitalfields in the garment factories. Mark’s working title for it is the ‘schmutter stool’ or perhaps the ‘Schtool’! We are going to sell it as a family product in normal size and perhaps a little one for kids: they’re very sturdy and comfortable, as a tailor’s stool should be. You will see a photograph on the website shortly.
We also had visits from several suppliers: Kerri from Creative Charlie dropped by with her children to tell us she has just won a Gold Award at the Practical Pre-school Awards 2008 with her Rainy Day Box! A Gold Award means that a product has scored above 85% with their testers, who work in pre-school education and know more about entertaining (and teaching) small children than anyone else.
Here’s what some of them said: “The children loved following the work sheets and began to implement ideas of their own into their creations. It’s value as a creative resource is immense and it incorporates flexible and and enjoyable activities, as well as helping to teach children about the environment. Everything in the box was great. The instructions were easy to understand and follow. The Rainy Day Box had a charming sense of simplicity, and my five-year-old was able to use it independently, as well as being encouraged to play co-operatively and share. It has fantastic educational value and appealed to children throughout the trial. Adaptable, original and a lot of fun!”. This is is fantastic news for Kerri and her wonderful product.
Naomi Dean also dropped by to tell us about her plans (she is going to be showing at Tent next week from the 18th to the 21st September) as did Samuel Morgan from Spinifex who is going to be showing his OTA Chalkboard and his new Splatt Chair at Designer’s Block from the 18th to the 21st September. September is clearly going to be a busy month for our designers! And of course Jaya and Annthalina from 3 Lotus Media were there to help us sell the beautiful Mimi and Myne T shirts they created for Mimimyne.

Welcome to Mimimyne, the home of sustainable, cool design for children (and their parents too!). We’ve got a whole lot of lovely things for you to look at: a desk for your homework, a bag for your shopping (and your Mum’s too!), and lots of dens and houses to play with and play in. And we’ve got lots of organic cotton T-shirts (there are some which have pictures of us on them as well). It’s Organic Fortnight from the 6th September to the 21st so celebrate by buying a T-shirt from one of our designers!
We’re going to have a stall selling our eco friendly kids clothes, furniture and T-shirts at the Spitalfield Show and Green Fair organised by Alternative Arts with the Spitalfields City Farm. It’s on the 14th September between 12 noon and 5pm in Buxton Street, London E1 (nearest tube Aldgate East). The Spitalfields show and green fair combines the Annual Horticultural Show of Fruit, Vegetables, Flowers and Home Produce with the Green Fair promoting the care and enjoyment of our natural environment.
The Spitalfields Show is a glorious display of home grown produce by people from all over London. Entries are accepted in 13 sections and 101 classes which include a special children’s section; flower arranging, fruit, vegetables, herbs, pot plants, preserves, cookery and handicrafts. Whether you have a garden, allotment, backyard, balcony or window box you can enter this show. Judges are drawn from local and regional expertise.
The Green Fair welcomes all kinds of stalls. There will be healthy living and nutritional advice, alternative therapies, info on recycling, composting and growing your own food, biodiversity and sustainability workshops, activities on Spitalfields City Farm, a market selling arts and crafts, organic food and drink with an emphasis on Fairtrade goods, info on climate change, emissions reduction, energy conservation and renewable energy for greener homes and a cycling arena. We hope some of you can come – entry is free!
